Let’s Talk About Naps: Why They Matter and How to Improve Them

Naps are often the hardest part of the sleep puzzle. 😴 Most babies struggle to get the right amount of daytime sleep, and it’s no wonder why! Between timing, length, and the right environment, there’s so much that needs to align for a good nap to happen. If you’re a parent juggling work, older kids, or just the everyday chaos of life, it can feel nearly impossible to get everything in place. But here’s the good news: it doesn’t have to stay that way!

Why Are Naps So Important?

Naps aren’t just about giving parents a break (although that’s a huge plus!). For babies, naps are essential for processing everything they learn and experience throughout the day.

Their little brains are working overtime, absorbing new information, mastering skills, and developing rapidly. Daytime sleep gives their bodies and minds the rest they need to grow and thrive.

The younger your baby is, the more sleep they’ll need during the day. Skipping naps or having inconsistent nap schedules can make it harder for your baby to sleep well at night—and we all know how precious those nighttime hours are for everyone in the family!

How Many Naps Does Your Baby Need?

To help you navigate naps, here’s a simple guide based on your little one’s age:

  • 6 to 8 months: 3 naps

  • 9 to 17 months: 2 naps

  • 18 months to 3 years: 1 nap

Adjustments may be needed as your baby transitions from one stage to the next, but this framework provides a great starting point. More on sleep recommendations here.

Why Are Naps So Challenging?

Most babies struggle with naps because getting everything “just right” can be tricky. Good naps depend on:

  • Timing: Too early or too late can result in a cranky baby who resists sleep.

  • Length: Short naps don’t give babies the restorative rest they need.

  • Environment: A dark, quiet, and comfortable space is ideal, but it’s not always easy to create—especially if you have older kids or are constantly on the go.

If you’re balancing work, other children, and the demands of everyday life, it’s no surprise that naps can feel overwhelming. But the effort is worth it. A good nap sets your baby up for better nighttime sleep, helping everyone in the family get the rest they need.
