New Year, New Sleep Goals: Prioritize Rest for Your Best Year Yet

Are you a fan of setting New Year’s resolutions? I’ll admit, I try to set goals each year to give myself a sense of direction, but if I’m honest, consistency isn’t always my strong suit. That’s why I prefer focusing on small, actionable steps I can take every day.

One thing that’s non-negotiable for me is sleep. My journey toward better sleep started when my now 7-year-old was 2. At that time, my husband and I were taking turns sleeping on a mattress next to her. We were absolutely miserable. Something had to change.

That’s when I worked with a sleep coach and learned a crucial lesson:

It’s not about stopping your child from waking up at night (because waking up is natural) but about teaching them what to do when they wake up.

Once my daughter knew how to handle waking up on her own, I could sleep through the night, and that changed everything. Suddenly, I had the energy and patience to be the best version of myself.

If you want this year to be your year, rest is essential. Good sleep is the foundation for a clear mind, boundless energy, and the patience to tackle life’s challenges.

Ready to start? Let me guide you through three simple steps:

1. Optimize Your Baby’s Sleep Habits

Make sure your baby has a solid foundation of healthy sleep habits. This includes creating the right sleep environment, establishing a consistent routine, and sticking to an age-appropriate schedule. While it’s normal for babies to wake up at night, frequent wake-ups (like every hour) signal that something’s off. Revisit the basics to ensure everything is working as it should, helping minimize wake-ups.

2. Teach Your Baby What to Do When They Wake Up

Once you’ve nailed the sleep setup, it’s time to help your baby learn how to handle those inevitable night wakings. For a 6-month-old, this might mean teaching them how to self-soothe. For a toddler, it could involve helping them learn to fix their blanket or even go to the potty independently. If you’ve already tried all the advice you’ve found online or on Instagram and are still struggling, I’m here to help!

3. Work on Your Own Sleep Habits

Now that your baby’s sleep is on track, it’s time to focus on your own rest. Ask yourself:

  • Am I sleeping in the right environment?

  • Am I going to bed at a reasonable hour?

  • What am I doing in the hour before bedtime?

  • Do I have consistent bedtime and morning routines?

Making small changes to your own habits can make a world of difference.
