Why Gentle Sleep Training Is About More Than Just Babies

When I first started thinking about sleep training, I assumed it was only about my baby. I wanted her to fall asleep more easily, to sleep longer stretches, and to wake up rested and happy.

But here’s what I didn’t expect: sleep training wasn’t just something I was doing for her. It was something I was doing for me, too. 💫

And no, it’s not selfish.

So often, moms put themselves at the very bottom of the priority list. We tell ourselves things like: “I’ll sleep when she sleeps,” or “I just need to push through for now.” But the truth is—our well-being matters just as much as our baby’s. Because

when we’re exhausted, frazzled, and running on fumes, we can’t show up as the moms we want to be.

My Breaking Point: Sleeping on the Floor Beside My Baby

For months, my nights looked the same: I would lie next to my daughter on the floor, waiting for her to finally fall asleep. Sometimes, I’d accidentally drift off there myself, waking up with a sore back and barely any rest.

It felt easier in the moment to do whatever worked… but deep down, I knew it wasn’t sustainable. I wasn’t just losing sleep—I was losing myself.

That’s when I realized that gentle sleep training wasn’t just about her learning to sleep independently—it was about me getting the chance to rest, recover, and feel human again.

What Babies Gain From Healthy Sleep Habits

Of course, my little one needed more sleep, too. She needed:

  • A predictable routine

  • A soothing bedtime ritual

  • A safe, cozy sleep environment

  • The skills to fall asleep independently

Once those pieces were in place, she was happier, more alert, and more settled during the day.

What Parents Gain From Gentle Sleep Training

But sleep training also gave me things I didn’t even realize I was craving:✨ A little time for myself at the end of the day✨ A bedtime routine I could enjoy without interruptions✨ Space to reconnect with my partner✨ A solid 7 hours of uninterrupted sleep✨ A morning routine that felt calm and intentional✨ And of course, a happier, well-rested baby

It wasn’t just about my child thriving—it was about me thriving, too.

Why Prioritizing Your Sleep Isn’t Selfish

Some parents hesitate to admit they need better sleep. There’s guilt wrapped up in it, as if asking for rest makes us less devoted. But prioritizing your health and well-being is never selfish.

In fact, it’s one of the most loving things you can do—for yourself and your child.

When you’re well-rested, you’re more patient. You laugh more. You have the energy to play, to listen, and to truly enjoy your time together. And that’s exactly what our babies deserve—the best version of us.
